Histrionics don't spread rumors intending to create grudges and factions; they just want a little drama. For them, gossiping about coworkers is a major source of entertainment. It's more fun than the company softball team, and you don't have to be a jock to play.

Gossip is also a major source of conflict and morale problems, particularly when it moves from being a vehicle for dissemination of general information to one for disseminating people's negative opinions of other people. Once that gets started, it's hard to stop. At the center of it all are sweet, innocent Passive-Aggressives like Ann, who are only trying to help.

Gossip usually takes you by surprise. Instead of thinking about what is going on, you are likely to respond with reactive fast thinking. Like Theresa, you hear something about yourself that isn't true. It makes you angry, and then and there you try to set the record straight, not stopping to think that by doing so, you are adding to the script of the Histrionic drama that is going on around you and are now a member of the cast.

What should you do instead? As in any situation involving emotional vampires, shift over to slow thinking.

Here are some suggestions.
